Networking Cables

September 11, 2008

Objectives: To learn to make network cables.

Equipment List: Wire cutters, wire strippers, CAT5 UTP cable, two RJ-45 connectors, a jack, a punching tool, patch panel, and cable tester.

Notes and Observations: I figured this would be and easy lab for me since i had previous experience making cables. The first crossover cable I made didn’t work, and upon examination I saw the color coding on one end was wrong so I redid that end and it worked. I then checked the internet settings to make sure i was connected since the internet in the labs was not working. I did not get a chance to punch the cable into a patch panel, but I did watch my neighbors do it. The last project was making an RJ45 data jack. When doing these two projects you are not supposed to untwist the cables any more than needed. This is because you want as little iterference between the wires. They could possibly jump.

Diagrams, Flowcharts, and Figures: I used the Color Codes for T568B wire standard diagram attached on the handout.

References: I frequently referenced the handout and my neighbors.

Questions: There were done in the following projects.

Project 3: The differences between CAT3 and CAT5 cables number of twists in a CAT5 there are 5 twists per foot. In a CAT3 there are twisted three times per foot. This is a assumption because I did not do this in the lab. I did however look it up on the internet.

Project 4: UTP versus STP. UTP is subseptable to EMI, its inexpensive, easy to instal, and well established in it’s products and technology. STP on the other hand is protected against EMI, it is faster and safer.

Conclusions: It is very important to know how to make your own cables. Likewise, if you are going to do this you need to make sure the colors match up to the plugs, jacks, or boards you are working with. This was a very useful lab.
